Metal Slug 5 was developed by Noise Factory and published by SNK Playmore, released for the Neo Geo MVS arcade system in 2003 as the fifth mainline entry in the run-and-gun series. Following the mixed reception to the outsourced Metal Slug 4, SNK Playmore brought development back closer to the series’ original creative team’s standards, resulting in a game widely seen as a genuine return to form, with denser, more inventive stage design and the series’ signature dark humor restored to prominence. Players once again lead the Peregrine Falcon Squad through a campaign built around escalating chaos, including a memorable stage-length boss chase and expanded vehicle variety, continuing the established formula of rescuing captured prisoners, blasting through waves of enemy soldiers, and commandeering the iconic Metal Slug tank and its many variants. Its improved pacing and more ambitious level design earned it comparisons to the fan-favorite Metal Slug 3, and Metal Slug 5 is frequently cited by longtime series fans as one of the strongest later entries, helping restore confidence in the franchise after the more lukewarm fourth installment.
