Double Dragon 3: The Rosetta Stone was developed and published by Technos Japan, released in arcades in 1990 as the third entry in the Double Dragon series. The story follows Billy and Jimmy Lee once again, this time chasing down a mysterious criminal organization across a series of real-world locations, including China, Egypt, and Japan, in search of three ancient Rosetta Stones said to hold the key to eternal life. The game introduced a coin-operated shop system between stages that let players spend accumulated points to recruit a limited set of additional playable fighters beyond the two Lee brothers, along with new weapons and combat techniques exclusive to this entry. Its globe-trotting structure and expanded cast were ambitious departures from the more straightforward revenge plots of the first two games, though the arcade version was also notably criticized on release for stiffer, less responsive combat than its predecessors. Despite a more mixed reception than the earlier games, Double Dragon 3 remains a notable, if divisive, chapter in the series that helped define early beat ’em up conventions.
