Metal Slug 2 was developed and published by SNK for the Neo Geo MVS arcade system, released in 1998 as the direct sequel to the original Metal Slug. Players once again control members of the Peregrine Falcon Squad, running and gunning through hand-drawn, richly animated levels packed with rescuable prisoners, destructible scenery, and the series’ signature Metal Slug tank, now joined by new rideable vehicles including a camel and a giant robot. The sequel expanded the roster of enemies and bosses dramatically and introduced a wider variety of environments, from deserts to icy tundras to a Middle Eastern-inspired city under siege, while keeping the fast, chaotic two-player cooperative action that defined the original. Its ambition came at a technical cost: the sheer number of on-screen sprites frequently pushed the Neo Geo hardware past its limits, producing noticeable slowdown during the busiest firefights, an issue SNK would specifically address in the following year’s Metal Slug X. Despite that, Metal Slug 2’s detailed pixel art and relentless pace cemented the series as one of the most beloved run-and-gun franchises in arcade history.
