Shock Troopers was developed by Saurus and published by SNK, released for arcades in 1997 as a top-down run-and-gun in the vein of classic overhead shooters, letting up to three players choose from eight mercenary characters with different stats and weapon behavior. Missions branch across multiple possible paths through each stage, meaning a full playthrough can vary significantly between sessions depending on which route a player picks, backed by destructible scenery and a steady stream of weapon pickups ranging from shotguns to rocket launchers. Its character select screen doubled as light squad-based strategy, since each merc’s speed and firepower trade-offs meaningfully changed how a stage played out, an unusual layer of depth for the genre at the time. Well received for its replayability and cooperative multiplayer, Shock Troopers built enough of a following to earn a direct sequel, and it remains a well-regarded example of SNK’s less fighting-game-focused arcade output.
