Metal Slug X

Introduction

Metal Slug X was developed and published by SNK for the Neo Geo MVS arcade system, released in 1999 as an enhanced remake of 1998’s Metal Slug 2, built specifically to fix that game’s notorious slowdown by trimming and rebalancing its most sprite-heavy sequences. Alongside the technical cleanup, SNK reworked enemy placement, added new weapons like the Drop Shot grenade launcher, tweaked several bosses, and introduced small new areas and secrets not present in the original release, while keeping the core two-player run-and-gun structure, vehicle roster, and hand-drawn art style intact. Players once again lead the Peregrine Falcon Squad through deserts, snowfields, and enemy strongholds, rescuing captured prisoners and commandeering tanks and other vehicles along the way. Because it refined an already well-regarded game rather than introducing a wholly new experience, Metal Slug X is often considered by longtime fans the definitive way to play the Metal Slug 2 storyline, offering a smoother, more polished take on one of the series’ most ambitious early entries.
