Metal Warriors was developed by LucasArts and published by Konami for the Super Nintendo in 1995. The player controls a pilot who leads a resistance force against an invading army, fighting mission after mission inside giant armoured mechs. Six different machines can be used, each with its own weapons and abilities, from a jet-powered all-rounder to a spider-like walker that clings to ceilings and a heavily armoured tank. At any time the pilot can climb out of the cockpit, move around on foot and take over an empty enemy mech, which opens up tactics that few action games offered. Weapons, shields and special moves are all mapped to the controller in a way that gives each machine a distinct feel. The game is also remembered for its split-screen two-player versus mode, which let friends battle each other in mechs across a variety of arenas and became a favourite among SNES owners.
