Cybernator, known in Japan as Assault Suits Valken, was developed and published by Konami, released for the SNES in 1992 as a side-scrolling mech action game set during a war between Earth and its space colonies. Players pilot a Powered Armor Suit that can walk, hover, and boost through stages, mixing a rapid-fire machine gun with a limited but powerful array of secondary weapons like missiles and grenades against enemy mechs, tanks, and capital ships. Its story leaned unusually dark and morally ambiguous for a 16-bit action game, with narration and character deaths that gave weight to what could have been a straightforward shooter. Praised on release for its weighty mech-piloting feel and cinematic presentation, Cybernator is often cited alongside Front Mission as one of the SNES’s better mecha-themed titles, and its Japanese original spawned a longer-running Assault Suits series.
