Wild Guns was developed and published by Natsume, released for the SNES in 1994 as a rail shooter blending Wild West setting with anachronistic robots and laser weapons. Players choose from a small cast of gunslingers and shoot enemies approaching from all sides of a fixed-perspective arena, dodging incoming fire with a roll and using a lasso to pull distant items and pesky enemies into melee range. Gold collected from downed enemies and destroyed scenery can be spent between stages on stat upgrades, adding a light progression layer to its arcade-style structure. A two-player cooperative mode and consistently inventive boss fights, including giant robots and steam-powered contraptions, helped it stand out among the SNES’s run-and-gun library. Overlooked commercially at release, Wild Guns has since been reassessed as a cult classic and even received an official HD remake decades later, cementing its status among fans of the genre.
