About Arcana

Arcana is a 1992 role-playing game created and published by HAL Laboratory for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System — the same studio behind the original Kirby’s Dream Land, which is why Kirby makes a cameo in Arcana’s opening sequence. It’s a first-person dungeon crawler with a twist: every character and enemy is represented as a playing card, and combat follows traditional turn-based JRPG rules rather than the point-and-click style typical of Western dungeon crawlers of the era. The story follows Rooks, a young boy who must stop the evil court magician Galneon after he stages a coup, kills King Wagnall, and seizes the throne, sending the king’s two daughters into hiding.

Controls are usually keyboard based natively or touch if on mobile. No download required.
