RoboCop versus The Terminator

Introduction

RoboCop versus The Terminator was developed by Interplay and published by Virgin Games, released for the SNES in 1993 as a licensed crossover between two of the era’s biggest action franchises, based on a comic book miniseries by Frank Miller rather than either film series directly. The plot has RoboCop discovering that Skynet’s rise is tied to his own cybernetic technology, sending him through Detroit and eventually into the future to battle waves of Terminator endoskeletons and Skynet forces with an arsenal of increasingly powerful weapons. Its side-scrolling run-and-gun action leaned harder into violence than either RoboCop or Terminator’s prior game adaptations, with dismemberable enemies and an aggressive pace that stood out on the SNES’s more family-oriented library. Built by a strong development team including future id Software collaborators, it was well received for its combat feel and dark tone, and remains one of the more fondly remembered movie-crossover games of the 16-bit era.
