Capcom released Super Ghouls’n Ghosts for the Super Nintendo in 1991, the third game in the series that began with Ghosts’n Goblins. Sir Arthur must once again rescue the princess, this time from the demon emperor Sardius, travelling through haunted graveyards, a ghost ship, rotting forests and a castle made of ice. The biggest new mechanic is a double jump, although the direction of the second jump cannot be changed, and armour upgrades are more elaborate: the bronze armour powers up weapons, and the gold armour allows a charged magic attack. Arthur still loses his armour when hit and falls to his underwear, and a second hit is fatal. As with earlier entries, beating the game once is not enough, as the player must complete a second, harder loop with a special weapon to reach the true ending. Its striking art and difficulty have made it one of the most celebrated action games on the system.
