ActRaiser was developed by Quintet and published by Enix, released for the SNES in 1990 as one of the console’s earliest showcase titles, splitting its gameplay between two distinct modes. In its action stages, players control a knight possessed by a benevolent god, fighting through side-scrolling levels against demonic forces in classic platformer combat. Between those stages, the game shifts to a simulation mode where players cast miracles from above, guiding settlers as they clear monster lairs and expand their towns across a top-down world map, with town growth directly unlocking new action stages. This hybrid of platforming and god-game simulation was unusual for its time and gave ActRaiser a distinct identity among the SNES’s early library, backed by an acclaimed Yuzo Koshiro soundtrack. It remains one of the more fondly remembered launch-era SNES titles and inspired later genre-blending action games that pair combat with world-building.
