Flicky

Introduction

Flicky was originally released by Sega as an arcade game in 1984 before being ported to the Genesis in 1991, casting players as a small blue bird tasked with herding a flock of baby chicks called Chirps safely to an exit while avoiding cats and other predators roaming each single-screen stage. Its core loop rewards careful routing over speed, since Chirps rescued and led in a group move together as a chain, and losing them to an enemy or hazard costs the player dearly in end-of-level scoring even if the level itself is technically completed. As one of Sega’s earliest original arcade properties, predating even Sonic by several years, Flicky represents a formative piece of the company’s identity before its mascot platformers took over, and its mix of simple rules with genuine strategic depth in chick management has kept it a well-regarded, if lower-profile, entry in Sega’s classic catalog.
