Golden Axe II

Introduction

Golden Axe II was developed and published by Sega, released for the Genesis in 1991 as a direct sequel to the original arcade-style fantasy beat ’em up, once again letting players choose between a barbarian swordsman, an Amazon warrior, and a dwarf axe-fighter as they battle through a sword-and-sorcery kingdom overrun by the tyrant Dark Guld. It keeps the original’s core formula largely intact, side-scrolling combat, mountable beasts that can be ridden into battle for extra attacks, and screen-clearing magic spells fueled by collectible potions, while adding new enemy types and expanded two-player cooperative play built specifically for the home console rather than a straight arcade port. Developed as a Genesis exclusive rather than an arcade conversion, it let Sega tune the difficulty and pacing more generously for home play than the notoriously demanding arcade original. Well received as a satisfying continuation of the formula, Golden Axe II remains a solid pick for fans of straightforward fantasy brawlers and cooperative couch play.
