Nintendo released Wario’s Woods in 1994 for both the NES and the Super Nintendo, and the NES version is known as the last game Nintendo itself published for the console in North America. Wario has taken over the Peaceful Woods and filled it with monsters, and Toad sets out to clear them with help from the fairy Wanda and Birdo, who drops bombs from above. Unlike most falling-block puzzle games, the player does not control the falling pieces directly. Instead, Toad runs around the bottom of the well, lifts and stacks monsters and bombs, and kicks them into place. Monsters are removed by lining up three or more objects of the same colour, including at least one bomb, horizontally, vertically or diagonally. Round-based stages steadily add new monster types, and a two-player versus mode lets friends trade attacks. The unusual control scheme gives it a style of its own among puzzle games of the era.
