Dynamite Headdy

Introduction

Dynamite Headdy was developed by Treasure and published by Sega, released for the Genesis in 1994 as a puzzle-platformer starring a living puppet named Headdy who can detach and launch his own head as both a weapon and a tool. Different interchangeable heads grant different abilities, from a hammer head for smashing obstacles to a drill head for breaking through walls, and levels are built around figuring out which head to use and when, layered on top of standard platforming and boss encounters. Its theatrical presentation, with stages framed as acts in a stage play complete with curtain transitions and a watching audience, gave it a distinct visual identity even among Treasure’s already inventive catalog. Combining the studio’s signature mix of relentless creativity and brutal difficulty, Dynamite Headdy is remembered as one of the more unusual and technically impressive platformers on the Genesis, and a clear sign of the design sensibility Treasure would carry into later hits like Gunstar Heroes.
