Money Puzzle Exchanger was developed by Face and released for the Neo Geo arcade system in 1997. Its twist on the competitive falling-block formula is built around Japanese coins: coins of 1, 5, 10, 50, 100 and 500 are pulled down from the top of the playfield, and the player gathers them and pushes them back up to combine them. Five 1 coins become a 5, two 5 coins become a 10, and the pattern continues up to the largest coin, so every exchange can trigger another if the pieces are arranged in advance. Chain reactions send extra rows of coins to the opponent’s side, and special cards can clear or upgrade coins. The game features a cast of colourful characters who each attack with their own pattern, and it can be played against the computer or head-to-head. Its quick rules and demanding chain setups have given it a devoted following among Neo Geo puzzle fans.
