Puzzle Bobble, released outside Japan as Bust-A-Move, was developed and published by Taito, released in arcades in 1994 as a spin-off built directly from the world of Bubble Bobble. Players aim and shoot colored bubbles from a cannon at the bottom of the screen up into a shrinking field of bubbles above, matching three or more of the same color to clear them and prevent the field from descending far enough to end the game. Series mascots Bub and Bob returned as the playable characters, now firing bubbles instead of trapping enemies in them, giving the new puzzle format an immediate visual connection to Taito’s earlier platformer. Its simple aim-and-match mechanic proved to be extremely accessible while still rewarding careful angle calculation and planning several shots ahead, and its head-to-head versus mode made it a natural fit for competitive arcade play. Puzzle Bobble’s blend of simplicity and depth made it one of the most successful and widely imitated puzzle games of the 1990s, spawning numerous sequels and ports across nearly every platform of the era.
