Sengoku 3 was developed by Noise Factory and published by SNK, released for arcades in 2001 as a return to the Sengoku series after a lengthy gap since Sengoku 2, blending side-scrolling beat ’em up combat with time-travel transformations tied to feudal Japanese mythology. Players fight through waves of enemies with combos and special attacks, occasionally transforming into a powered-up spirit form for a limited time to unleash stronger attacks and turn the tide against tougher encounters. Its combat added more technical depth than the earlier Sengoku games, with a more involved combo system and character-specific movesets that gave it more in common with late-90s SNK fighters than its simpler predecessors. Arriving relatively late in the Neo Geo’s commercial life, Sengoku 3 did not reach a wide audience at release but has since been appreciated by genre fans as an underrated, mechanically deeper entry in a beat ’em up series that never got the recognition of SNK’s more famous franchises.
