TAD Corporation released Toki in Japanese arcades in December 1989 under the title JuJu Densetsu, with Fabtek handling the North American release as Toki in February 1990. Akira Sakuma designed it around a premise no other platformer of the era shared: an evil sorcerer transforms the hero into an ape and abducts the woman he loves, so the entire quest is played out in simian form. Toki attacks by spitting energy projectiles from his mouth, a mechanic that sounds absurd and plays beautifully, and temporary helmet power-ups upgrade the shot into spreads, fireballs and rapid streams. Stages carry him through swamps, caves, ice and a lava-soaked finale, each ending in an oversized boss. What sets the game apart from its run-and-gun contemporaries is its tone – lavish cartoon animation and comic timing sit alongside genuinely demanding one-hit-death platforming, giving it a personality that home ports and a later remake have kept alive.
