Crossed Swords

Introduction

Crossed Swords was developed by Alpha Denshi and published by SNK, released for arcades in 1991 as a first-person perspective sword-fighting game, an unusual viewpoint choice that put players directly in a knight’s boots rather than viewing combat from the side as most fighting games of the era did. Players guide a young prince seeking to reclaim his throne, battling through waves of enemies and bosses using a horizontal gauge that determines sword swing direction, timing blocks and strikes based on incoming enemy attack patterns shown from a first-person view. Its perspective made positioning and timing feel more like a rhythm-based dueling simulator than a traditional side-view brawler, a distinctive enough hook that it stood out even within SNK’s already varied early Neo Geo catalog. Though it never reached the popularity of SNK’s later fighting series, Crossed Swords remains a notable early example of first-person melee combat in arcades, predating the format’s later, more elaborate uses in other genres.
