Bonanza Bros

Introduction

Bonanza Bros was developed and published by Sega, ported to the Genesis in 1991 from its 1990 arcade original, casting players as one of two ghostly thieves, Robo and Mobo, sneaking through buildings to steal valuables while avoiding patrolling guards. Rather than direct combat, the core mechanic revolves around timing and stealth, players can stun guards with a temporary gun blast but cannot permanently defeat them, so successful runs depend on ducking behind cover, timing movement between patrols, and grabbing loot before slipping out through an exit. Its two-player simultaneous co-op mode let a second player join as the other brother, turning the stealth puzzle into a cooperative heist rather than a solo challenge. An unusual entry in Sega’s catalog for building an entire game around evasion rather than combat, Bonanza Bros has aged into a well-regarded curiosity among fans of early stealth-focused game design, predating the genre’s later, more elaborate evolution.
