Shinobi III: Return of the Ninja Master

Introduction

Shinobi III: Return of the Ninja Master was developed and published by Sega, released for the Genesis in 1993 as the third mainline entry in the Shinobi series, continuing ninja Joe Musashi’s fight against the Neo Zeed crime syndicate. Building on the acrobatic platforming of The Revenge of Shinobi, the game adds new moves like a running dash into a slide attack, a leaping kick, and a swimming stage, alongside a magic system that lets Musashi unleash powerful screen-clearing ninjutsu attacks at the cost of a limited resource. Its stage design leaned into set-piece variety, including motorcycle chases and a segment riding a surfboard down rapids, giving the game a more varied pace than a straightforward run of side-scrolling levels. Praised on release and in retrospect for its tight controls, fast difficulty curve, and inventive level gimmicks, Shinobi III is widely regarded as the high point of the Genesis Shinobi games and one of the console’s best action-platformers overall.
