ActRaiser 2 was developed by Quintet and published by Enix, released for the SNES in 1993 as a sequel that dropped the original’s town-simulation half entirely to focus purely on side-scrolling action, a significant structural departure that divided longtime fans. Players once again control a knight possessed by a benevolent deity, but instead of alternating between action stages and above-the-clouds city management, the sequel is built as a straight run of increasingly elaborate platforming levels against demonic forces led by Tanzra’s surviving generals. Freed from needing to balance two different game modes, the level design leaned harder into large, detailed boss encounters and tighter platforming challenges, with noticeably higher difficulty than the original. Reception at the time was mixed specifically because of the missing simulation half that had defined the first game’s identity, but taken purely as an action-platformer, ActRaiser 2 is often praised for its boss design and presentation, even as it remains the more divisive entry in a short-lived series.
