Sunset Riders

Introduction

Sunset Riders was developed and published by Konami, released for the SNES in 1993 as a home port of the 1991 arcade run-and-gun set in a cartoonish Wild West populated by bounty hunters and outlaws. Players choose from four playable gunslingers, each with slightly different weapons, hunting down a rogues’ gallery of wanted criminals across saloons, trains, and desert towns while collecting bounty money and power-ups along the way. Its side-scrolling stages let players shoot in eight directions and jump between foreground and background planes to dodge incoming fire, adding a layer of positioning strategy on top of straightforward run-and-gun action. The SNES version trimmed some content from the four-player arcade original to fit cartridge constraints but preserved its core co-op action and irreverent Western tone, and it remains a well-regarded example of Konami’s arcade-to-console conversions from this era.
