Wrecking Crew

Introduction

Wrecking Crew was developed by Nintendo R&D1, directed by Satoru Okada and produced by Gunpei Yokoi, with designer Yoshio Sakamoto building his first game after a stint as a pixel artist around a simple idea: a puzzle-action game about demolishing walls. It debuted as an arcade cabinet on the Nintendo VS. System in 1984 with simultaneous two-player support, then arrived as a single-player Famicom release in Japan in 1985 and as an NES launch-window title in North America later that year. The playable demolition worker originally had no connection to Mario at all, but Shigeru Miyamoto saw an early build and suggested swapping in Mario, reasoning that he was simple to draw and already recognizable to players, cementing the character’s association with the game ever since. Across each stage, players smash through walls, ladders, and enemies with a hammer while dodging hazards and avoiding an oil-drum-throwing rival named Spike, working through a fixed grid layout to clear every breakable object on screen before advancing, in a level-based puzzle format that also let players design and share their own custom stages.
