Blaster Master

Introduction

Blaster Master was developed and published by Sunsoft, a studio better known during the 8- and 16-bit era for licensed tie-in games, with directors Hiroaki Higashiya and Koichi Kitazumi, designer Kenji Sada, and composer Naoki Kodaka leading a small team of around five people on what became the company’s one original flagship franchise. It began as a Japanese Famicom release called Super Planetary War Records: Metafight in June 1988, arriving in North America that November under its more familiar name and reaching Europe in 1991. The premise follows a boy named Jason who chases his pet frog into a hole after it’s exposed to radioactive waste and grows monstrously large, discovering a tank called SOPHIA THE 3RD that he uses to explore an underground alien world, alternating between side-scrolling vehicle-based exploration stages and top-down, on-foot shooting sections whenever Jason has to leave the tank to progress. That mix of Metroid-style non-linear exploration with vehicle combat and on-foot gunplay gave Blaster Master a genuinely distinctive identity among NES action games, and it’s remembered fondly enough to have spawned two sequels and multiple spin-off titles since.
