Sonic the Hedgehog

Introduction

Sonic the Hedgehog was developed by Sonic Team and published by Sega, released for the Genesis in June 1991, created specifically to give Sega a mascot capable of competing directly with Nintendo’s Mario. Character artist Naoto Ohshima designed the blue, super-fast hedgehog after winning an internal design contest, while programmer Yuji Naka built a physics engine that let Sonic roll and curve smoothly along looping hills and slopes, a technical showcase meant to demonstrate speeds the Genesis hardware could achieve that competing systems couldn’t match. Players guide Sonic through fast-paced side-scrolling zones, collecting golden rings that act as a buffer against damage, defeating the mad scientist Dr. Robotnik’s robotic enemies, and racing toward each zone’s exit as quickly as possible while chasing a high score built around speed and momentum rather than careful platforming alone. Its combination of striking character design, genuinely novel physics-driven speed, and an instantly memorable soundtrack made it an enormous commercial success that established Sonic as Sega’s flagship character and launched one of gaming’s most enduring franchises.
