Ghouls’n Ghosts was developed by Capcom, released as an arcade game in 1988 before being ported to the Genesis by Sega, reaching the console in 1989 as one of the system’s earliest and most technically impressive third-party conversions. Players control the knight Arthur, once again battling through a demon-infested kingdom to rescue Princess Prin Prin, wielding various throwable weapons like lances, daggers, and fire while collecting armor upgrades that determine both Arthur’s defensive capability and his available attacks, with each hit taken stripping away armor before finally leaving him vulnerable in his underwear. The Genesis port was praised on release for capturing the arcade original’s challenging difficulty, tight controls, and detailed sprite work remarkably faithfully, at a time when many other arcade-to-console conversions suffered from noticeable graphical and performance downgrades. Its unforgiving difficulty, which famously required completing the game twice in a row to reach the true ending, became as much a part of its reputation as its technical achievement, and Ghouls’n Ghosts remains one of the most respected action platformers to reach the Genesis in its early years.
