Zero Wing
Introduction
Zero Wing is a horizontally scrolling shoot ’em up originally developed by Toaplan and released in Japanese arcades in 1989, headed by development chief Toshiaki Ōta and a team drawn from several earlier Toaplan projects. It was ported to the Sega Mega Drive with a Japanese release in May 1991 and a European release the following year, tasking players with piloting a starfighter through waves of enemy ships and bosses belonging to the invading CATS empire. The Mega Drive version is best known today not for its gameplay but for its European intro cutscene: an awkwardly translated line of dialogue from that opening, ‘All your base are belong to us,’ went on to become one of the internet’s earliest and most enduring memes, giving this otherwise modest shooter a lasting cultural footprint far beyond the arcade and console scene it came from.
