Comix Zone was developed and published by Sega, released for the Genesis in 1995 as a beat ’em up starring comic book artist Sketch Turner, who gets pulled inside his own creation after a villain named Mortus escapes into the real world through one of his drawings. The game’s defining gimmick has Sketch fighting through panels of the actual comic page, tearing through panel borders to progress, using crumpled paper balls as thrown weapons, and occasionally calling on his own inked-in dog, Roadkill, for help against enemies drawn from the same comic. Its hand-drawn art style, dynamic panel transitions, and Sketch’s own sarcastic narration made it one of the most visually distinctive games on the Genesis, pushing the console’s sprite and parallax capabilities to create a genuine sense of moving through a living comic book. Though its unforgiving difficulty and short length drew some criticism at release, Comix Zone has become one of the most celebrated cult classics in Sega’s catalog for its sheer originality.
