Super Fantasy Zone

Introduction

Super Fantasy Zone is a side-scrolling shoot ’em up developed and published by Sunsoft for the Sega Mega Drive, released in Japan in January 1992 and in Europe the following year, though it never saw an official North American release. Sunsoft came to the project with experience from having developed the Famicom version of the original Fantasy Zone, and this Mega Drive entry is the third mainline game in the series, once again casting players as the small ship-like character Opa-Opa on a mission to defeat the tyrant Dark Menon across a series of free-roaming, side-scrolling worlds. Money earned from defeated enemies can be spent between stages on new weapons and engine upgrades, a shopping mechanic that had already become the series’ signature. The game is especially remembered for its soft pastel visuals, which pushed the Genesis’s 64-color palette further than most of its contemporaries, paired with a soundtrack by Naoki Kodaka that reworked themes from the original arcade game.
