Truxton is a vertically scrolling shoot ’em up developed by Toaplan and published by Taito for Japanese and European arcades in October 1988, with Midway handling the North American arcade release. Conceived by Masahiro Yuge around the idea of a memorization-focused scroller, the design team included Naoki Ogiwara, Sanae Nitō, and Yuko Tataka. Sega approached Toaplan directly about a home conversion, and the same in-house staff who built the arcade original ported it to the Mega Drive/Genesis in 1989, though both Nitō and fellow staffer Uemura later said the console’s hardware limitations made the conversion a difficult one. Players pilot the Truxton starfighter through tightly patterned enemy waves and bosses, relying on a mix of a forward-firing main shot and a rotating side-attack that made the arcade original a cult favorite among vertical shooter fans.
