Contra III: The Alien Wars was developed and published by Konami, released for the SNES in 1992 as the series’ debut on Nintendo’s 16-bit console. The game continued the run-and-gun formula of its NES predecessors while taking full advantage of the SNES’s Mode 7 scaling and rotation effects, alternating traditional side-scrolling stages with top-down sequences and a memorable motorcycle chase down a vertical wall. Up to two players could battle through waves of alien and mechanical enemies toward a series of large, elaborately animated bosses, with a new weapon-fusion system letting players combine two power-ups into a stronger single armament. Praised on release for its punishing difficulty, spectacular set-pieces, and technical showcase of the console’s capabilities, Contra III is frequently ranked among the best action games of the 16-bit era.
