Street Fighter II Turbo was developed and published by Capcom, released for the SNES in 1993 as an enhanced port of the arcade update Street Fighter II’: Hyper Fighting. Building on the original Street Fighter II: The World Warrior, Turbo introduced faster gameplay speeds, new special moves for the existing eight World Warriors, and for the first time on a home console, made the four boss characters, Balrog, Vega, Sagat, and M. Bison, playable outright. Players could adjust the game’s speed via a turbo dial, sharpening the competitive edge that had already made the series an arcade phenomenon. Its SNES release was a critical and commercial landmark, frequently cited as one of the finest fighting games of its generation and a defining reason many households bought the console. Street Fighter II Turbo remains a touchstone of the genre, still played competitively decades after its original release.
