Street Fighter Alpha 2

Street Fighter Alpha 2

Introduction

Street Fighter Alpha 2 arrived in arcades in 1996, and Capcom brought it to the Super Nintendo later that year. Set between the original Street Fighter and Street Fighter II, it expanded the roster with fighters such as Sakura, Dhalsim, Zangief, Gen and Rolento alongside returning favourites like Ryu, Ken, Chun-Li and Guy. Its signature addition is the Custom Combo system, which lets a player spend part of the super meter to unleash a brief window of freely linked attacks, replacing the chain combos of the first Alpha. Alpha Counters, air blocking and multi-level super moves round out a fast, technical fighting system. The Super Nintendo version used Nintendo’s S-DD1 compression chip to fit the large arcade sprites onto a cartridge, which is why short pauses appear before some rounds. Despite those loading moments, it was a remarkable conversion for 16-bit hardware and one of the last major fighting games on the console.
