World Heroes 2 was developed and published by ADK, with assistance from SNK, for the Neo Geo MVS arcade system, released in April 1993 as the sequel to 1992’s World Heroes and notably the first release to carry the ADK name after the studio rebranded from its earlier identity as Alpha Denshi. The game brings back all eight fighters from the original alongside six new historical and pop-culture-inspired additions, including shark-summoning pirate Captain Kidd, hammer-swinging Viking warrior Erik, and punting American football player Johnny Maximum, continuing the series’ throw-anyone-from-history-into-a-fight premise. Its headline new feature was an overhauled Death Match mode, replacing the standard dual-lifebar format with a single tug-of-war-style shared meter and a wrestling-inspired knockout recovery system, playable across new stages packed with unique environmental hazards. Additional refinements like taunts, throw reversals, and the ability to reflect projectiles back at opponents rounded out a noticeably deeper toolkit than the first game offered, and World Heroes 2 is generally remembered as the point where the series found its own identity distinct from its more famous Neo Geo fighting-game rivals.
