Saturday Night Slam Masters

Introduction

Saturday Night Slam Masters was developed and published by Capcom, released in arcades in 1993 with character designs contributed by manga artist Tetsuo Hara, best known for Fist of the North Star. The game reimagines professional wrestling as a fast-paced arcade fighter, letting up to two players grapple, throw, and slam their way around a ring using a roster of exaggerated wrestler characters, each with signature moves and finishing holds, while working to either pin an opponent for a three-count or throw them clear out of the ring entirely. Matches could be fought as straightforward one-on-one bouts or as chaotic multi-wrestler battle royals, and the game supported both traditional wrestling rules and looser, more arcade-style scoring depending on the mode selected. Its blend of exaggerated character designs, genuinely varied move sets, and accessible but surprisingly deep grappling mechanics set it apart from the era’s punch-and-kick fighting games, and it went on to spawn several sequels and console ports that helped establish wrestling as a viable arcade fighting subgenre in its own right.
