Breath of Fire was developed and published by Capcom, released for the SNES in 1994 as the studio’s first venture into traditional turn-based RPGs, starring Ryu, a young dragon clan warrior who can transform into various dragon forms in battle. Players lead a party of anthropomorphic animal companions, including a fish-man swordsman and a bird-woman, across a fantasy world split by war between the Dragon and Dark Dragon clans, gathering allies with distinct racial abilities that also solve overworld puzzles outside combat. Its combat followed familiar turn-based JRPG conventions of the era but distinguished itself through Ryu’s dragon transformations and a diverse, memorable cast whose non-human designs stood out against the more conventional human parties common to the genre. Well received for its worldbuilding and character variety despite a fairly standard battle system, it launched one of Capcom’s longest-running RPG franchises and remains a solid entry point into the series’ 16-bit era.
