Mega Man X3

Introduction

Mega Man X3 was developed by Minakuchi Engineering and published by Capcom, released for the SNES in Japan in December 1995 as the third entry in the Mega Man X sub-series. The game expanded on its predecessors’ formula by introducing a second playable character, Zero, who could be controlled for a limited portion of the game using a fast, melee-focused sword-based moveset distinct from X’s ranged buster shots, alongside a new set of armor upgrades and a fully powered-up “Ultimate Armor” available to players willing to track down every hidden capsule scattered across the game’s stages. Players once again fought through a gauntlet of Maverick-controlled stages in flexible order, absorbing defeated bosses’ signature weapons, while a rogue scientist’s new creation, the powerful Reploid Doppler, drove the game’s central Maverick uprising storyline. Mega Man X3 was also the last entry in the sub-series developed primarily for the SNES before the series transitioned to 32-bit hardware, and its expanded cast and armor systems, particularly the introduction of a playable Zero, proved influential enough to become recurring staples across nearly every Mega Man X sequel that followed.
