Dr. Robotnik’s Mean Bean Machine was developed by Compile and published by Sega, released for the Genesis in 1993 as a Western localization of Compile’s own 1991 Japanese puzzle game Puyo Puyo, reskinned with characters and setting from the Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog animated series rather than Puyo Puyo’s original cast. Players drop pairs of colored beans into a vertical well, arranging them so that four or more matching beans connect to clear from the board, while sending garbage beans onto an opponent’s board when clearing large chains, turning single-player puzzle-solving into a genuinely competitive head-to-head format in its two-player mode. The game’s story frames the beans as captured citizens of Mobius transformed by Dr. Robotnik’s Bean-o-matic Machine, with Sonic tasked with defeating Robotnik’s Badniks to free them, giving an otherwise standalone Puyo Puyo adaptation a loose tie to the Sonic universe.
