Treasure developed Yu Yu Hakusho Makyō Tōitsusen for the Mega Drive, and Sega published it in Japan in 1994, with a Brazilian release following later. Based on the popular manga and anime by Yoshihiro Togashi, the game lets players control Yusuke Urameshi, Kuwabara, Kurama, Hiei and many other characters from the series. Its biggest feature is support for up to four players at once, with every fighter on screen at the same time. Battles take place on two planes, a foreground and a background, and fighters can jump between them to dodge attacks or chase opponents. Each character has spirit energy attacks taken from the anime, along with dashes, blocks and quick combos. The story mode follows the Makai Unification Tournament arc. Fast action and detailed sprites made it one of the most respected licensed games on the system, even though it never had an official western release.
