Mortal Kombat II hit arcades in 1993, and Acclaim brought it to the Genesis and other home systems in 1994. The tournament moves to Outworld, where the emperor Shao Kahn has given Shang Tsung another chance to defeat Earth’s warriors. The roster grew to twelve playable fighters, with newcomers including Kitana, Mileena, Jax, Kung Lao and Baraka joining returning favourites like Liu Kang, Scorpion and Sub-Zero. Every character received new special moves, and the series’ finishing moves expanded far beyond Fatalities to include Friendships, Babalities and stage-specific finishers. The digitized graphics were sharper and the combat faster and more fluid than in the first game. The Genesis version keeps the blood and finishing moves of the arcade original and was a major release on the system. It is still regarded by many as the best of the classic Mortal Kombat games.
