Aero Fighters was developed by Video System, ported to the SNES in 1993 from its arcade original, a vertically scrolling shoot ’em up letting players choose from a roster of pilots and aircraft from different countries, each with distinct stats and a unique special weapon. Its stages take players across real-world locations rendered in the series’ colorful, slightly cartoonish style, fighting through waves of enemy aircraft and ground targets toward large, screen-filling bosses at the end of each level. The character selection added a light layer of personality and replay incentive uncommon in shoot ’em ups of the time, since each pilot’s special attack meaningfully changed how a player might approach tougher sections. Well received for its accessible difficulty relative to other shmups and its charming presentation, Aero Fighters helped establish a series that continued across several console sequels, and the SNES port remains a solid, approachable entry point into the genre for players intimidated by harder bullet-hell shooters.
