Beyond Oasis was developed by Ancient and published by Sega, released for the Genesis in 1994 as an action-adventure following Prince Ali’s quest to master an ancient armlet capable of summoning elemental spirits. Combat blends direct sword-swinging and throwable weapons with four summonable spirits, fire, water, plant, and lightning, each solving different combat and environmental puzzles as players explore dungeons and overworld areas. Its fluid animation and physics-driven touches, like water that can be redirected or fire that spreads across grass, were unusually advanced for the Genesis and drew frequent comparisons to Nintendo’s Zelda series. Known in Japan as The Story of Thor, it was praised on release for its presentation and design but remained a relatively under-the-radar release in the West. It has since built a strong cult reputation as one of the Genesis’s best action-adventures, alongside Ancient’s spiritual sequel Legend of Oasis on the Saturn.
