Jurassic Park

Introduction

Jurassic Park was developed by BlueSky Software and published by Sega, released for the Genesis in 1993 as a tie-in to that year’s blockbuster Steven Spielberg film of the same name. The game let players choose between two very different characters and play styles across its campaign: game warden Dr. Alan Grant, who explores Isla Nubar on foot in a more traditional side-scrolling action-adventure format, or, in a distinctive twist for a licensed movie game, a Velociraptor stalking the island’s human staff from a top-down perspective, hunting prey and evading armed hunters instead of the other way around. Both campaigns wove together exploration, combat, and light puzzle-solving as players worked to either restore park systems and escape the island as Grant, or survive and hunt as the raptor. Its willingness to let players actually play as one of the film’s dinosaurs, rather than simply running from them, set Jurassic Park apart from typical movie tie-in games of the era, and it remains fondly remembered as one of the more inventive licensed titles released for the Genesis.
