Waku Waku 7

Introduction

Waku Waku 7 was developed by Sunsoft, released for the Neo Geo MVS arcade system on November 21, 1996, as a deliberately lighthearted, comedic fighting game built around a cast of seven eccentric main characters rather than a numbered sequel to an earlier title, despite what its name might suggest. Its roster includes a boxing rabbit, a giant sentient teddy bear, and a robotic maid among other exaggerated, cartoonish fighters, each equipped with over-the-top special moves and finishing “Wakuwaku Bombs” delivered with slapstick comic timing that set the game apart sharply from the more serious tone of SNK’s own fighting game lineup on the same hardware. Beneath its comedic presentation, the game featured a technically solid combo system with genuine depth, including chainable normal attacks and character-specific super moves, giving it real competitive substance despite its goofy aesthetic. Waku Waku 7’s blend of colorful, exaggerated character design and surprisingly capable fighting mechanics earned it a dedicated cult following among fighting game enthusiasts, and it remains fondly remembered as one of the more distinctive and purely fun entries in the late-1990s Neo Geo fighting game library.
