Real Bout Fatal Fury Special

Introduction

Real Bout Fatal Fury Special was developed and published by SNK, released for the Neo Geo MVS arcade system on January 28, 1997, as an expanded update to the previous year’s Real Bout Fatal Fury, following the same pattern SNK had used for earlier “Special” revisions of its other fighting series. The game brought back nearly the entire roster from across the whole Fatal Fury series to that point, including previously retired characters, giving it by far the largest cast the franchise had assembled up to that point, while keeping the single-plane, ring-out-capable stage design introduced in the original Real Bout. Character balance was refined further, several fighters received new moves or adjusted properties, and the game’s overall pacing was tightened based on feedback from the original Real Bout’s competitive community. Its combination of a genuinely huge roster with the technically solid combat system established in Real Bout Fatal Fury made it a fan-favorite entry, frequently held up by longtime players as one of the most polished and complete versions of the classic Fatal Fury formula before the series pivoted toward the spiritual successor Garou: Mark of the Wolves two years later.
