Kizuna Encounter: Super Tag Battle

Introduction

Kizuna Encounter: Super Tag Battle, released in Japan as Fu’un Super Tag Battle, was developed and published by SNK, released for the Neo Geo MVS arcade system on September 20, 1996, as a weapon-based tag-team fighting game. Players select a team of two fighters and can freely swap between them mid-match by tagging in a designated area near the edge of the stage, a genuine departure from the assist-based tag mechanics popularized by Capcom’s Vs. series releases around the same time, since both characters remained fully controllable rather than one serving only as a support attack. Its roster blended new characters created specifically for this game with a distinct emphasis on varied weapon types, from swords to whips to more unconventional tools, giving fights a visually distinct, chaotic energy compared to SNK’s more traditional unarmed fighters like Fatal Fury or Art of Fighting. Though it never achieved the same lasting popularity as SNK’s flagship franchises, Kizuna Encounter is often cited by fighting game historians as an underappreciated experiment in tag-team design that offered a genuinely different structure from its more famous contemporaries.
