The Last Blade, released in Japan as Bakumatsu Roman: Gekka no Kenshi, was developed and published by SNK, released for the Neo Geo MVS arcade system on December 5, 1997, as a weapon-based fighting game set during Japan’s Bakumatsu period, the turbulent final years of the Edo shogunate. Players choose from a roster of sword-wielding warriors caught up in a conflict between rival factions fighting to control a demonic gateway threatening to destroy Japan, selecting between two combat styles before each match, a faster, more aggressive Speed style or a slower but more powerful Power style, giving players real tactical choice in how they approached each fight. Its lush, painterly hand-drawn art direction and richly detailed backgrounds set it apart visually from SNK’s more conventionally styled fighters, while its historical setting and swordplay-focused combat drew natural comparisons to SNK’s earlier Samurai Shodown series. The Last Blade’s distinctive presentation and technically deep dual-style combat system earned it a dedicated following among fighting game enthusiasts, and it launched a well-regarded sequel the following year that many fans consider one of SNK’s most underrated later fighting games.
